Hamburger curry arrives with a satisfyingly substantial hamburger steak over moderately spicy curry sauce, accompanied by salad, soup and a generous serving of fukujinzuke pickles. At キッチン やわた in Higashisuna, the old-fashioned Western-style menu ranges from curry favourites such as katsu curry and hamburger curry to omurice carefully wrapped in a thin omelette and a fragrant pork ginger-yaki set meal, all at reasonable prices. There are plenty of rice dishes to choose from, including freshly stir-fried, piping-hot omurice and dry curry omurice.

It works just as well for a drink with a few snacks from the board as it does for a full meal. Simple small plates such as potato salad, blanched spinach and fish sausage and egg stir-fry can be enjoyed casually with bottled beer, chūhai or oolong highballs.

With counter and table seating, the relaxed space is run by a husband-and-wife team and welcomes everyone from solo diners to small groups. Opening hours are 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for lunch and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the evening; the restaurant is closed on Thursdays. Payment is by cash, so it is best to come prepared.
